Excel - when reopening a number of linked documents and not wanting to go through the "update Reference to Non-Resident Sheets" routine - use the Resume Excel documents.  (A Resume Excel document is created each time you chose Quit from Excel.)    Activate (open) all the chars, worksheets, macros, linked files, etc... that you will be using for your next Excel session.  Now choose Quit from the File menu.  When you have returned to the Finder rename the resume document so that the next time you quit Excel it does not get replaced.
